Sunday Morning Music

hHey Oh!!

Welcome to another
Sunday Morning Music post —
where we dig through the
stacks and stacks of dusty wax
to pick out the instances of
creativity, serenity and joy
among the
vast wastelands of
vapid noise
and gross commercialism
characterizing popular music
in general.

(Uh oh–
he’s in one of his moods,
again.)

That notwithstanding,
our music post today
does have a rather fun and whimsical
60’s, 70‘s and 80’s overtone, I guess…

Ok,
so not much 60’s or 80’s, really.

And since I spent an
inordinate amount of time
working on tiny little details of it this week,
it’s really more like a minefield.

As for a theme, well….
Hey, figure it out, pal.

Maybe it’s something
darkly subconscious and Freudian, I dunno.
— uhhh
yeah.

Let’s do this.

We’re gonna keep it coolin’ baby.

.

Led Zeppelin —
Whole Lotta Love

.

These boys from Boulder, Colorado,
(home of my favorite brewery)
are living proof
that they can make more than good brewski there….

Firefall —
Strange Way

.

This song, when stacked next to other songs from 1975,
stands out for it’s beauty, complexity and execution.

And in case you’re wondering,
there were only three of them –
Dan Hamilton,
Joe Frank Carollo,
(thus, no comma between Joe and Frank)
and Tommy Reynolds.

Hamilton, Joe Frank and Reynolds —
Fallin In Love

.

Our next selection is performed by a group
who chose their name from the average amount of —
well, let’s just say ‘manly love juice’.
(yes, that’s her, alright)

I wonder if that’s the daily production,
or the party size.

Anyhoo….

The more ethereal sections of this song
never fail to grab my attention….

10 CC —
I’m Not In Love

.

Bruce Blackman, and the band called Starbuck
from Atlanta, Georgia,
hit one out of the park with this pretty piece:

Starbuck —
Moonlight Feels Right ”

.

This native Texan wrote some great music
for Kenny Rogers and Bobby Gentry —
then got a couple hits of his own,
with
Carolina In The Pines” ,

.

and, of course, this one:
Michael Martin Murphey —
Wildfire

.

Never heard of the Korgis?
Well, now, that’s a crying shame.

Korgis —
Everybody Gotta Learn Sometime

.

Here’s a piece originally written by Neil Young,
and performed by the late
Nicolette Larson —
Lotta Love

.

Mick Hucknall is the voice of a British group
called “Simply Red” —

I bet you’ll know it as soon as you hear it.

Simply Red — “ Holding Back The Years

.

Harry Chapin didn’t live to see his 40th birthday.
But the music he created in his short life
will be inspiring music lovers for generations to come.

His epitaph (from one of his songs)
seems very appropriate:
Oh if a man tried
To take his time on Earth
And prove before he died
What one man’s life could be worth
I wonder what would happen
To this world

Harry Chapin —
Taxi

.

Thought of today as one of the leading creative lights
of the music business in the 1970’s,
here’s Jeff Lynne and ELO :

Electric Light Orchestra —
Telephone Line

.

As it still is today,
television programming in the 1970’s was pablum and formulaic.

However, there were some memorable pieces of theme music –
Like this one:

Jose Feliciano —
Chico and The Man

.

I appreciate your visit,
and I hope you enjoyed this post !!!

.

Our album selections this week are:

John Lennon — ” Double Fantasy “.

George Harrison — ” All Things Must Pass

Paul McCartney — ” McCartney

Ringo Starr — ” Blast From Your Past “

if you’re into it.

I did too much of that
when I was a kid,
so I’ll just sit quietly,
thank you.
